Meet Dr. Van Westen

Creating Spectacular Smiles that are Yours Forever!

Thank you for choosing Van Westen Orthodontics!

I understand the importance of quality and comfortable treatment. I choose to care for my patients in a state-of-the-art, specialized, patient-centered environment.

Because everyone is unique, so too is my treatment for each patient.

I’m blessed to work with a variety of patients of different ages, interests, and backgrounds. I am proud to be one of the few female and bilingual orthodontists in the Milwaukee area.

I treat my patients and their families the way I would like my family to be treated. That includes the highest quality and individualized orthodontic care, and a personal interest in you and your family. I love seeing how each person’s confidence grows as we work together to create their Spectacular Smile.

My Education

  • Bachelor of Science in Biology (BS)

 Bemidji State University                       Bemidji, MN

  • Doctorate of Dental Surgery (DDS)
University of Iowa College of Dentistry Iowa City, IA
  • Residency in Orthodontics and Dentofacial orthopedics
University of Iowa College of Dentistry
  • Master of Science (MS),                       Emphasis in Genetics
University of Iowa College of Dentistry

While in dental school, I received a dental research award scholarship to engage in orthodontic research. My main project was studying discomfort levels during orthodontic treatment and the effectiveness of over-the-counter analgesics. I also participated in two summer internships that were very special to me. I worked at the Hospital for Rehabilitation of Craniofacial Anomalies in Sao Paulo, Brazil and with the Colorado Migrant Farm Worker Program, to provide preventive dental care for children.

During my residency, I studied the genetics of cleft lip and palate. In 2006, I received the Milo Hellman Research Award, the highest award for research given by the American Association of Orthodontists, for my thesis on the genetics of craniofrontonasal dysplasia.

Personal Life

I grew up in Belo Horizonte (Beautiful Horizon), the third largest city in Brazil, between Rio and Sao Paulo. I’ve always been active in sports, especially swimming, gymnastics and volleyball.

During my junior year in high school, I participated in a year abroad in Bennington, VT. That experience was a life-changing event and I decided to move to the United States for my long-term education.

After living in several cities during my studies, I moved to Milwaukee in 2009 and I love all the area has to offer and the quality of life we enjoy in Wisconsin.

I love spending time together with my family, especially going to area attractions, the Milwaukee Zoo and museums. We also love the outdoors and go biking, boating, and traveling.

We participate in Christian education at Elmbrook Church in Brookfield. We are more connected to the community and have made wonderful friends here.

Continuing Education

I am active in local orthodontic and dental societies. I also participate in regional and national meetings, and take many continuing education courses throughout the year. This enables me to learn about the latest research, treatment changes, and new technologies. I am able to expand my knowledge and skills constantly, to ensure my patients receive the best care for their smiles.

I serve as a mentor to dental students at the Marquette University School of Dentistry. This provides the students with a trustworthy role model to discuss their questions and dental school experiences with.

I am also very proud to serve on the editorial advisory board of the Wisconsin Dental Association Journal, where I and other dentists from several regions of Wisconsin discuss relevant topics in the dental field and communicate our findings with our colleagues and the public across the state.
